Statement
The Shenandoah Valley provides endless inspiration for artist GM Grant. His images of local animal life and scenery convey a unique sense of place. He also finds beauty in items and situations often overlooked. Whether it’s a rusty car fender, a gnarly aged tree, or a dilapidated farmhouse, GM celebrates a deeper, hidden beauty found in the realm of the forgotten. His paintings explore the idea of entropy as a slow-motion kinetic force, reshaping objects, places and perspectives.
While his earlier portfolio leaned toward oils and pastels, GM shifted to watercolors with the goal of maximizing the medium’s inherent transparency and luminescence. However, he also wanted to work against the medium’s traditional approach, creating a multi-layered signature look that might even be mistaken for a different medium altogether.
An award-winning artist, his work has been recently recognized by the Shenandoah Arts Council and displayed at The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (Winchester, Va.), Revelation Vineyards (Madison, Va.), 7 East Gallery (Woodstock, Va.), Muse Winery (Woodstock, Va.), Arts Incarnate (Harrisonburg, Va.) and in private collections in Portland (Maine), St. Petersburg (Fla.), Dallas, Seattle, Atlanta and throughout Northern Virginia and the District of Columbia. A Florida native, he now calls Luray, Virginia home.
